Bonnie Levine
Bonnie Levine’s ceramic work is made intuitively by bringing to life the internal landscape. The mood of the moment, the plasticity of the clay, the moisture in the air and other variables converge to produce pieces that reference the natural world and embody the human form. Throwing lines, finger marks, and dents are celebrated and integrated into the design. The tension between the emotive quality of a single sculpture or an arrangement, and the hardened-yet-fragile material, adds complexity to the work.
Experimenting with various clay bodies and firing methods has been an integral part of the process-- nurturing curiosity and expanding the vision. The distinct and often subtle quality of the surface holds the energy of the complex interactions of the process.
At this point, four distinct bodies of sculptural ceramic work have emerged. Each series contains one-of-a-kind pieces that are individually created by hand, in multiples, producing a community of vessels. Individual pieces within each series are placed together, interacting with one another to produce layers of conversations.
