I like to create functional pieces because I believe there is a deep and meaningful connection, and journey to be made with an artful object that not only appeals to the senses of sight, touch and sound, but also fulfills a useful role in one’s life. I enjoy the idea that through use, one may develop a relationship with a cherished object, a beautiful yet humble friend.
My work is informed by music, and this is the language with which I view and create it. My works are very often improvised around a base form. I start with a loose idea of the object and create an appropriate foundation, then begin to play. I move the clay and it listens to me, at times I listen to the clay and yield to its direction. I add embellishments and details. The work itself is the recording, the grooves and marks conveying the rhythms of the performance, the textures, the colors.
I love to experiment, to find new patterns, new rhythms and textures, and I prefer not to play any song exactly the same way twice.
