Kathleen Heidemann

Kathleen Heidemann was born and raised in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts.  She earned a BFA in studio art with a concentration on painting from Long Island University in 1984.  In the late 1990’s she began studying ceramics.  Her first class was with tile maker Frank Giorgioni at Parsons School of Design in New York City and more recently she has studied with Tip Toland at Haystack Mountain School in Maine as well as attending many workshops at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York.  She makes carved ceramic tiles and hand-builds both functional and sculptural forms.
She wants her pieces to be surprising, each side revealing the unexpected.  She wants them to convey a sense of animation and, however eccentric (three-legged, asymmetric, multi-rhythmic), to have their own grace.  Many of her works are based on human and animal forms and are full of humor and whimsy.  There is a strong attention to detail and each invites touch and feels comfortable in the hand.
Kathleen is a recipient of the 2007/2008 Dutchess County Arts Council’s Individual Artists’ Fellowship.  Her studio, The SLAB, is located in New York’s Hudson Valley.  See Contact for information about visiting The SLAB.

Kathleen Heidemann will be at Amy Brenner’s Studio.
